Informatique, ordinateurs et décisions médicales
Information science, computers and medical decisions
The electronic digital computer is one of the great advances of the twentieth century, and has been studied intensively in the context of medical decision making. This presentation discusses the medical decision making process, describes the potential limitations of the computer, sets out the results of current work and (finally) discusses current philosophical questions such as the computers role, where is should obtain its data, and which doctors (if any) are likely to need such an aid to decision-making. It is argued on the basis of current evidence that the computer has a substantial role in medical decision making ; as a stimu-lous to good practice and as a teaching companion - though not as a substitute for the clinician.
