TITLE
State of the art in Belgium

ABSTRACT

After our first investigation carried out in 1999, we drew up a new inventory and statement on Digestive Endosonography in whole Belgium. A questionnaire was sent out to all physicians currently practicing the technique in Belgium, with reference to the available listing of the members of the Belgian Group of Digestive Endosonography. This national assessment concerned the whole EUS activity over a period of 4 weeks. The technique is currently performed in 33 centres. Altogether, 53 endosonographers performed 970 EUS during September 2004. The 4 main indications are distributed as follows : 44 % concern biliopancreatic diseases, 32 % anorectal diseases, 20 % upper digestive tract and only 4 % mediastinum. The proportion of cancers explored by EUS is 47%.

EUS guided fine needle aspiration is performed in 20 centres representing 14 % of all EUS examinations.

High frequency EUS with miniprobe is performed in 55 % of centres. The use of mini probes still remains confidential with only 2 % of the exams. Interventional EUS is available in 21 centres and represent 3.6 % of all the investigations.

Other important data are detailed as : association of EUS with another endoscopic exam, use of the Doppler, rate of complication, type of sedation, assessment of the progression of the EUS activity and recruitment of the patients, training etc.

Conclusion : the results of this survey are quite important as they give objective data about the technique and confirm its value at a national level.
